Points on a driver’s license can impact his or her insurance and eligibility for certain types of employment that mandate a clean driving record.
Additionally, points can result in DMV fines and even the suspension of a driver’s license. If a driver accrues eleven points or more in an eighteen month period his or her license may be suspended.
If a driver accrues six or more points in an eighteen month period the DMV will charge the driver with a driver responsibility assessment fee. In 2020, this fee consists of $100 a year for three years for six points on a license. For each point over six the DMV assess another $25 in fees each year.
The chart to the right of this text outlines the number of points assessed for specific moving violations of the Vehicle and Traffic Law.
